Mineral makeup is preferred by many people around the world. Mineral makeup, as the name suggests, primarily consists of minerals extracted from nature. Amongst a wide variety of minerals, mineral makeup contains an ingredient called mica. It is a component which gives mineral makeup the pure pigment colour which is so much in demand these days. But like many other minerals its usage and effects have remained controversial over the years.

Those against the use of mica in natural mineral makeup debate that the tiny particles of mica, inhaled in the long run, are harmful for a person. Inhalation of mica has been connected to many problems such as coughing, lung scarring, weakness, weight loss, shortness of breath and many other respiratory problems. So much so that even workers who have to use or handle mica wear masks so as to avoid inhaling it.

However, those in favor of Mica usage claim that Mica is safe. They argue that mica has from times immemorial been used for decoration purposes. Moreover, it is not only found in natural mineral makeup but in many other non-mineral cosmetic products as well. They stress that alternatives to mica, like dyes and lakes and other such colorants, are much more hazardous and should be avoided at all costs.

Therefore, makeup users have long remained divided on the safety of the usage of mica in mineral makeup. But one thing is for sure, it is an ingredient that for better or worse cannot be escaped by makeup users.
